Hey all,

So I recently upgraded my network. These are the 2 network devices I am using.

Modem: ZyXEL CDA30360 DOCSIS 3.0
Router: TP-LINK Archer C5 AC1200

For starters, The strange thing is while using the Wireless AC 5Ghz connection on my phone, my latency is nearly a constant 10-11ms, which I am super happy with.

But my wired network, latency hovers around 13ms -20ms. I have no issues with these numbers or my network but am just wondering my my wireless network is seemingly more efficient than connecting via a LAN cable..

Thanks in advance!

Solution
That is close to impossible because of how the technology works.

First ping to the router IP not some ip in the internet. Most people get 1ms or less it depends if the computer will display less than 1ms.

The actual transfer time in a ethernet cable is about 2/3 the speed of light. So you can actually calculate the time it takes to pass though a copper cable. It is extremely tiny. Now there is software on both the PC and the router that will add time that is much more than the actual transit time. Still when you look at the speed of even the router processor it is a tiny amount of time.

To actually get higher numbers something is telling lies. I would suspect software in the PC, some of the so called accelerator software actually causes issues like this.

On wireless it is a little different because if errors are detect it will re transmit until it gets a clean copy which can add delays.

Well the test I ran was with speedtest.net, I'm sure pinging my network devices will be give me speed of light results lol.

Also for reference here are my results:

-with modem to PC = 6ms (very constant)
-modem to router, router to PC = results I mentioned in OP

So it old be a stretch to say it's windows software related. Is their another reliable ping test site I can check?

yes you may, network cable is an undetermined age so I will test again with the new Cat 6 cable I bought about a month ago and report back.

If you have problem only when you insert the router then you have to be suspect of the router...it would be hard to say though what can cause that only for eithernet.

Using tools like speedtest is only good for basic checking your internet connection there is no way to tell if the problem is in your house, the cable to the isp or the ISP network or even the speedtest server.

You have to use the actual ping command because it is very simple.

A ethernet cable is very different than wireless. Eithernet does not get higher latency when the cable is defective the packet is just discard and you will get no response at all. So if you were to ping your router and see loss then you could suspect a bad cable. The cable itself and the hardware nics can not delay the data. If you were to see a delay it would have to be something like the router was too busy processing something else and delayed responding until it finished that.

Solution

So I testing pinging router and modem from my pc. even ping my modem from router settings and 1ms all the way. which was expected. thanks for all the advice! Honestly i say it's just my ISP to blame for the inconsistencies so I'll just consider this a none issue.

Thanks for everyone's responses.
