Higher RAM speed than the motherboard allows

I've got a slightly older motherboard that's memory standard is DDR3 2133(OC) / 1600 / 1333 / 1066 / 800. Last week I bought some new RAM without realizing that it's speed is 2400.

I've been meaning to do a new build soon anyway so I can just use the RAM I bought for that if it doesn't work with my current build, but would I have any problems putting the faster RAM in the slower MB? I saw a few threads that said it would be fine but nothing with a jump in speed like this. Just wanted to be sure before I open it up for nothing.

as long as it's within the specified voltages it will work, it might or might not clock up to rated speed but that probably won't be automatically ( but could on a slim chance ) and to get the rated speed probably will most likely require manual setting everything or just voltages and/or speed and/or timings.

there's really no reason to upgrade as long as you've got a top ghz processor and if not that would be the only part i would recommend upgrading to fastest you can afford cpu.
