I am a bit confused about choosing the best= highest processor for legacy INTEL (Original) MB: DG965RY with LGA775 socket. I will appreciate if any experts can suggest the processor(s for the same.
Some ready references : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2
MB Information Manual: https://www.intel.com/content/dam/s...boards/965/DG965RY/DG965RY_ProductGuide03.pdf

Specifically would want to know whether (1) this board (MB) supports processors with FSB of 1333Mhz.

Some other information I would appreciate is : (2)What is the highest Microsoft Windows OS this board can support and (3)whether 8GB of DDR2 (5-5-5) RAM will provide for any incremental performance improvement.

Just update bios firstly to the latest, to make sure it will run.

On CPU upgrade table you see which bios CPU requires, which motherboard model number.

On bottom of page are comments of tested and non working by people.

On right side of every CPU you have Green, orange, yellow tick sign or X sign.
They indicate if the CPU works or not, which has its table at bottom what does it mean.

Now the issue is Q6600 is actually 1066MHz FSB, but I dont think the motherboard has micro code for it or non supported wattage (65W vs 95W/105W)

Also here is supported list of official.

The best i see its E6700 and fsb of 1066.
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel/DG965RY.html

It can run windows 7 decently or try windows 10 with trial.

A tiny bit? I really only could feel within benchmarks improvment the timings for ram.

One can expect the Power dissipation to be nearly double as twice the number of processors are in Q6600 ;
I don't think the MB will support the multi-processing nor can handle the power dissipation. The Q6600 does have good multi-processing performance scores though....

One more clarification I seek is would replacement of ONLY the CPU (processor) entail that I reinstall the present boot OS (every other hardware remains the same) ? Does this apply generally for all processor upgrades, for instance upgrading processor on INTEL MOBO DH77EB ?

If your said mobo already running the latest BIOS (Boot OS), you don't need to do so, except it's the other way round. Then you would have to update the BIOS to the latest version.

I am using a Core 2 Quad Q6700 overclocked to 3.1 Ghz (stock 2.66 ghz). The mother board VRM is able to handle 95 w tdp required by this cpu. My cpu has vid of 1.225 v and g0 stepping. I suggest you go for this cpu over fsb 1333 cpus like Q8400 which will either not work or even if it does it will downclock due to fsb1066 max supported by the mb ( q6700 has 8 mb cache which is more than most Q8x00). You can also try q6600 but it has two variants of 95 w and 105 w unlike Q6700.
Also update bios and use SetFSB software for overclocking. Windows 10 is supported. I am using latest insider preview release of Win10 on this mb without any issue. Ssds are supported. If possible try searching for used ADD2 card which can add more features to this mb. I heard you can add hdmi, dvi, s-video, lvds and tmds ports on top of the vga port already present on board. Hdmi audio is linked from the on board header.
