Hitachi Jan-2010
i built a new desktop and when swapping drives ( SSD with OS) and two mechanical drives to the new build I must have bumped the Hitachi too hard so now all it does is click so the read/write hears are hunting back and forth and the drive does not show up on the PC. Windows 7 Pro 64.
is there the possibility that i could find another one of these drives and swap out the platters so i can get the data off of the old one? Or can the problem be with the circuit board on the back of the drive? either way does anyone know of parts or drives like this one are available anywhere? the drive data recovery people want around 400 plus another drive to copy the possible recovered data on to.
Thnnks,
Gene

Hi martygene and welcome to the community.

First of all, I'd say that you should remove the S/N of the drive if it's still under warranty. When you say that "it doesn't show on the PC", do you mean that you have checked Device Manager and Disk Management as well?
Now for the problem at hand - there's no way to change the HDD platters and even if it was possible, it would be pointless, because the information you want is on the platters of your HDD. Perhaps you've mistaken the platters for the PCB? The PCB can be changed with another one, from the exact same model HDD, in hopes that this turns out to be the cause for the issue. Unfortunately even if this is the case, this is a pretty long shot and it might not work. There could be other factors causing this problem as well, such as: faulty SATA port or SATA cables, a loose connection, mechanical issue, etc.
I'd suggest that you try connecting the drive to another computer, to see if it's properly recognized, or at least use a different SATA port with different cables on this one and make sure that everything is connected properly. If that doesn't help you could try accessing it via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if it's recognized and if you can get to your files, or try with data recovery software: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html. However, the most reliable option would be - a data recovery company.

Please let me know how everything goes.

Are you sure these 'clicks' arent strong enough to actually be the arm hitting the spindle violently? Also, if by a chance its the circuit board, i've seen cases where replacing it for an identical one would solve, but the plates... we'll i'm not sure about this, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but HDD's are sealed, or at least arent supposed to be opened, cuz once you do, it's done, so the platters cannot be swapped.

try to use some disk manager software to see if the disk was not, somehow, assigned to a letter.
