HL1 - Apprehension Level Problem

Have played HL2 and was blown away by it ... thorough
enjoyment!!! Decided to get a copy of HL1 and have had numerous
probs with it but the dedicated web sites and news groups have
been very helpful ... but I'm now stuck!

The level is 'Apprehension' and the problem occurs near the
very beginning of that chapter after the train has plunged into
the far pool. I can successfully make my way to the opposite
pool and leap in but any attempt to go below the surface of the
second pool leaves me in complete darkness. I cannot see the
walls or bottom but can see random bubbles, nasty little fish,
the remains of the submerged red railing which don't seem to
help. I've read every FAQ and Walkthrough available and know
that apparently there is a tunnel entrance at the bottom of the
second pool but I'll be danmed if I can find it.

Question: What do I need to do so that I can gain proper vision
under the water's surface?

TIA

Turn your flashlight on. There is indeed an exit at one side of the
pool. I can't remember if it's a doorway, or a hole bashed in the wall.
It may be partially obscured by fallen junk.

I'm sure his problem is something else, Chadwick. You should still see
everything without the flashlight... Gordon might be ready for a cornea
transplant.

If I remember correctly the original HL defaulted to Direct X as the
renderer. This was fine for normal play but made it almost impossible to see
underwater. If you video card supports it, switch to Open GL in the video
settings. This will make the water clear, and normal play is fine also. I
think there is also a setting option for 3DFX for old VooDoo video cards,
but I know nothing about that.

Yep - when I played HL1 I switched between OpenGL for visibility under water
and DirectX for smoother out-of-water gameplay. Try the training level where
you need to swim for a bit (I think it's right after the shooting range). If
you can't see any wall textures when under water, it's a video card/driver
problem.

Thanks guys the switch to OpenGL saved the day ... I'm back in
the game, literally. My VidCard (Radeon 9100 IGP built-in to my
ASUS P4R800-V Deluxe MB) had to be set to OpenGL for 3D but once
I did that it worked 'swimmingly'!!!

Thanks again
