HL2 - Black and Pink Checkerboard Texture?

Anyone else have a black and pink checkerboard texture showing up at
different places?

I've only played the game for a few minutes, but the "video walls" that the
characters keep looking at, and the suit of the administrator guy in the
hologram, are black and pink checkerboards for me. I know they're not
supposed to look this way. Anyone else run into this?

Any advice aside from reinstalling?

TIA

I seriously doubt re-installing would do you any good. It's unlikely
the install would be corrupt enough to do that, but still be well
enough to play. More likely a video card issue, brobably drivers.

Rolled drivers back to 4.3. Same problem. I see corresponding errors in the
log:

*** tried to load a non-VTF file as a VTF file!
Error reading material "materials/models/props_c17/fence_alpha.vtf"

The above is the fence texture, which shows up as a black and pink texture
everywhere.

I'm going to try defragging and see if that's the problem.

Any more tips are still welcome.

TIA

I've seen the pinkness after switching video modes. If I quit the game and
re-start, then its back to normal. I have an x800 XT with 4.12b drivers.

I was having flashing multicolored textures with the 4.10s - reverted to
the 4.8s and that fixed it. Also try disabling AI on more recent drivers.
Make sure desktop is set to 32bit.

Yes I saw it in only in 1 location so far in the map, it was in a tight
tunnel with those live droopy things, it was quite a small square
probably about 1", I took a screenshot.
Everyone else in this thread doesnt seem to understand it is EXACTLY
like a checkerboard.

this is my gaming system.. a7n8x deluxe, aiw 9800 pro, xp3200+, 768 megs
of ocz pc32200EL omega 4.10 drivers.

this is a game issue texture glitch, not a vid card/driver issue.

heres the url of the screenshot, it looks better if you download the pic
and toss it in a viewing app. on the web it doesnt have the perfect
checker squareness as it was seen ingame.

For the length of times I've played HL1 and all its mods, this simply looks
like a missing texture/sprite.
If you get this from a custom map, go to the map's creator website and
re-install it. Downloading a custom map or other directly from the game
server will often 'forget' to d-load certain components.

If it's from an original map, take a look at the steam support forums for a
fix, or re-download and install the game.

Yes, this is the issue I'm having. It's way more prevalent with me.
Everywhere there's a fence on the first level, I see black and pink
checkerboard. I'm hoping the defrag will fix it. I actually got a full
night's sleep and am still waiting for the defrage to finish, so I guess the
disk was pretty messy. The logic is that with so many textures to load, the
game probably misses some of the more badly segmented files. I hope.

He guys.. this thread at driverheaven talks about these purple
glitches (w/screenshots) and how to fix them. AMD seems to be a
commonality with the problem.

Why in the world would changing where things are physically written on
your HD have any effect at all?

Because the graphics are stored inside huge archives up to 1GB. When you
start a level, the textures are extracted from the archive. If the archive
is broken up across your disk, with all that loading, certain textures might
be corrupted in the process of loading them off the disk into memory.

Make sense?

No. If there is corruption, you have a duff hard disk or your
filesystem is screwed. Either way, a defrag won't help. A thorough
scandisk would be a lot more useful.

I did a scandisk before defragging of course.

In the end I fixed the problem by deleting HL2 local content and letting
Steam download it.

Could also be the game itself in the way it's stored and/or converted
textures...which is why Valve tells you to delete the local content archive
to fix it...face it, it's still in beta...
