I'm looking for a home media server build that will be used primarily as an Emby server to host media files for streaming from within my home as well as outside. Requirements:
4 Cores, 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD, CPU must have iGPU, under $450. I currently have the following picked out and I'm curious as to whether anyone has any suggestions.

  • Intel Xeon E3-1225 V3
    Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H
    Crucial 8GB ECC DDR3-1600
Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM HDD (Will eventually get an SSD as well as more 2TB to expand in RAID)
    Cooler Master N200 MicroATX
    Corsair CX430

Thanks,
Gabe

Exactly.
My HTPC media box has 6 drives (incl the small SSD OS drive)
24(?)TB, no raid needed or wanted.

RAID what?
RAID 0 = striped. 2TB + 2TB + RAID 0 = 4TB. More space and potentially greater speed. But playing music and movies does not benefit from 'more speed'. A movie only plays so fast.
Plus, you earn greater fail potential.

RAID 1 = mirror. 2TB + 2TB + RAID 1 = 2TB.
Only helps in case of a physical drive fail. Does not help if you accidentally delete something.

Just add drives as needed. No RAID needed.

Ahh, I suppose I could just add another library location in Emby. Thanks!
