This will be my 4th PC built, but every time I like to come on here for a final check to make sure everything is all good.

Budget Range: $600ish AUD
System Usage: Home, Mostly Internet Stuff (for my Dad)

So I ask you all for your recommendations on improvements and just a general compatibility check to make sure I didn't miss anything.
This PC is just my Dad with everyday use, mostly for using eBay as he hobbies in that. Would like it to have some speed and multitasking as he can get frustrated easily.
Brands don't matter too much, as long as you know they are reliably. The price range is somewhat flexible within reason.

I think your dad should be fine with an i3-4310 or i3-4150. I would recommend getting an 128GB or 256GB ssd if storage space isnt an issue. This combo should be better in speed as well as price. 4GB ram should be enough honestly for what hes doing.

If all hes doing is just multitasking and browsing, this build would be more then plenty for him You could possibly even knock the ram down to just 4gb's but 8 is that sweet spot for modern systems. But the build is more then perfect for just home computer needs

I'd prefer to stick with the i5 quad core, I know there is a huge price difference. As for the HDD space, I know I didn't really specify, but a 128-256GB SSD isn't enough storage and the increase in boot time isn't worth the extra cost. If I understand correctly, by dropping the i5, putting in an i3 and an SSD also while keeping the SATA, brings it to a similar price and increasing speed. Where does the speed factor come in other than the SSD?

With RAM these days I prefer to put in 8GB, that way you will always have plenty and not have to worry about upgrading.

I'll have to agree with ncoll36, as for the computer itself, if all hes doing is browsing and steaming online, the 7200 rpm HDD is plenty. The i5 is also perfect because in the rare case that your dad turns into a gaming dad! (Or maybe someone wants to game on the system or something idk xD) You could just throw a videocard in there and it would all workout fine! You would need to upgrade the psu, but thats about it! The 8gb of ram IS today's modern sweet-spot. This computer will last your dad a long time, without the needs to upgrade for an even longer time
