I'm looking to get a color printer for home and hoping to get some recommendations. It's been a long time since I've owned my own printer (used the school or work for the past 10+ years) so not sure what the best brands are these days. I know HP made good printers as well as Epson. Is that still the case?

What printer would you recommend for basic home use to print black and white documents and color photos. I don't plan on doing photo paper prints, but would like to be able to make good color prints when I'm just looking for a basic print to put on the fridge or give someone.

What are your thoughts between printer and multi-function machines. Back in the day I didn't like the multi-function machines, but wondering if they're any better now.

Thanks for your help.

If you hadn't mentioned photo printing I would recommend a Brother inkjet printer for home use as they are incredibly cheap to run with compatible cartridges and pretty user friendly. Their ability to produce photos is fine but they simply don't have the vibrancy of colour that 6 colour Epson printers or 5+ cartridge Canon printers can offer. I would encourage you to order a sample print from Brothers website using this link and see if it suits your needs.

Failing this any printer in the Epson PX range should be great for you or any modern Cannon inkjet that does NOT take only two cartridges (these will cost you a fortune to run). As far as specific model numbers go for Epson, Brother or Canon this would depend upon whether you need them to be wireless/airprint compatible, need a fax machine etc.

Most modern inkjet printers will have a scanner and copier anyway and as a general rule only the budget printers (with high running costs) or expensive specialist printers tend to come without them.

Hope this helps in some small way.

Thanks for the help. Sounds to me that most modern printers are multi-function now with scanning/copying included and just a normal printer are the cheap ones. I was never a fan of the multi-function, but as long as the print capability is good on these, then I'm sold. I remember 10+ years ago the multi-function printers were terrible in print quality. I'll check out Epson and Canon.

if your not prining on photo paper, forget ink jets. Ink jets printing on plain paper look terrible. they only print well on expensive paper. Get something in the middle and get a reasonable quality laser printer, brands to look for for laser printers - Xerox, Canon, HP, lexmark. Avoid brother, they are cheaper for a reason. If you want a halfdecent photo from a laser printer, Xeox do a fairly cheap 1200 dpi model that is quite good, although HP and canon, have good 600dpi models. If you get good quality laser printer paper (dont use inkjet paper in a laser printer, it will melt and destroy it.) it will loook good.
