Some friends and I were looking at making a file hosting and game server. This is what we came up with. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/KFqkhM
We found a guy selling a Dell r900 with four quad core Xeon 7400's at 2.4 GHz and 128 GB of RAM. But the Xeons are older. Which would be better?

I think the build you and your friend put together would be completely fine other than the motherboard. In my personal experience every ASRock I've seen has failed in less than 3 months.

server? i7? haha! go pentium, celeron, i3, or xeon. do it right. supermicro or asrock-rack. OS on separate drives, preferably a RAID-1 pair of SSD.

The guy selling the server is selling it for $400. And we wanted that i7 because we will be file hosting for somewhere in the ballpark of 50-100 people and running game servers.

Will the four Xeons be better than an i7 5820K?

For number crunching and hosting programs prefer more less powerful cores and more ram I think would help with what you are describing. Reply with any further questions!

I'm fairly sure yes because that is a lot of cores to work with that can do a lot of number crunching and a lot of ram for them to run on
