Hello everyone

So i want to get myself a server build and like to use one of 2 platforms i currently already have.

gigabyte x58a-ud3r paired with I7 960
or
asus z68 v pro gen3 (currently paired with an I3 3rd gen)

I'd like to use hyper V. 1 server and 1 or 2 clients.
I have enough 4GB sticks to fill all banks on the X58.

thank you for your thoughts on this.

Solution
I would stay with the x58, update the bios and drop a x5670 into it. That will give you 6 cores 12 threads that will help out with VM's. The other good news is they run anywhere for $25-50 on ebay and overclock pretty well.

I had a x5690 in my x58 board that i kept at 4.2Ghz on a Cryorig H7 for a few years

Yeah well... i know the capabilities of the x58 platform ant i also know that th x58 chipset is actually built to use for servers but it doesnt have the virtualisation extension the z68 boards have. Not sure if it would make a huge difference having that extra extension but i like to believe it does considering my lack of experience with virtualisation ofcourse.

Also i read that the x58 is not very power efficient in idle compared to the z68.
What i dont know is if the x58 xeons also have this high idle power consuption problem.
