I am currently running windows Vista 32 Bit Home Premium and I have 4 GB of Ram (I just installed 2 more GB to the stock PC). Host Process for windows is taking up to 50% of the Pc and the Services connected to it are ...
Windows Update,
Windows Management Instrumentation,
Themes,
Shell Hardware Detection,
System Event Notification Service,
Secondary logon,
Task Scheduler,
Remote Access Connection Manager,
User Profile Service,
Multimedia Class Scheduler,
Server, IP Helper,
IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules,
Extensible Authentication Protocol,
Background Intelligent Transfer Service,
Application Information,
Application Experience.

Can I close any of these or do something to minimize its computer usage?

Solution
When it happened to me i found out it was the svchost connected to windows update as i had it set to automatically check for updates. When i disabled this the cpu usage went back down to normal, i just have to remember to check for updates manually every now and then
