We currently have a third party web hosting service @ $95/month. Our current web site is fairly static and hasn't been updated since 2015. We want to build a new site that would be more colourful, easier to use, and provide secure access (well, as secure as the internet can be which isn't very) for our members. Our current provided quoted $5,000 for such a site written in WordPress. The questions we have are:
  1. Is this a good deal?
  2. Would we be better off with something from WIX or Wordpress.com and build our own? I haven't built a site in close to 20 years and that was via Google.
  3. Is using an ISP as host better than hosting the site ourselves?
  4. We could use the web kit our ChMS provider has for about the same money but their templates are somewhat limited. It would provide the member access. Worth pursuing?

Thank you for your advice and support.

Solution
It will be hard to know, unless we know the specifics and what's required on the website.
Building a website for a small business could cost $250 or even more than $10,000.

I have a friend that usually charges in the range of $4k-$10k for professional small business website.
When too many pages and customization are required, the prices could be higher than $20k.
Make sure the prices include both, designing and building the site.

Be careful with very low pricing, since often, it translate into shoddy work.

  1. Completely unknown. We know nothing of the specifics
  2. If you have to ask, don't build it yourself
  3. If you have to ask, do NOT host it yourself
  4. Not without a dedicated web person to manage this

This is akin to "We want to upgrade the plumbing and HVAC in the office. Should we do it ourselves?"
