how bad is a screw terminal box for an ethernet connection?

I'm trying to connect an ethernet cable from the wall to a surface mount box, but even though I have checked the wiring configuration and the switch, none of my laptops can connect to the (fully working) switch.

That shouldn't render the connection unusable unless there's a misconnected wire but punchjacks are the norm for CAT5/CAT5e jacks

that's what I thought, might as well go digging for the punch jack box somewhere in my basement.
