Makes and model numbers would be helpful.
Any real AV receiver would have more than one HDMI input and at least one HDMI output.
If the "receiver" has only one HDMI connection (input or output) but not one of each then it may be designed to connect via HDMI ARC to your TV. All you sources connect to the TV directly. Your TV has to have an HDMI ARC labeled input and it has to be turned on. TV manual will tell you how.
