You want minimum 16 GB ram and at least 2 storage drives for programs.
i-6500 is probably the best cpu price/performance ratio for gaming and work.
You´ll want a cpu cooler for overclocking and a z170 series mobo with SLI ability
A 650+ watts PSU for SLI and overclock with good voltage regulation and good ripple supression and good quality caps.
Down below what you need. I added SSD, Air Cooler and switched a few things around. I don´t want to reuse your old DDR3-1333 mhz ram tbh.
It didn´t get cheaper, but you got a better build-
You can drop the CPU to the i5-4460 or i5-4590 to reduce costs. The Xeon below will give you i7 performance without integrated graphics. You could drop the SSD to further reduce costs. No overclocking...
Is there anything special you're trying to do with your build? Others might be able to chime in with their thoughts based on your needs. If you only ever play Minecraft, for instance, you probably don't need the 970.
Straight I would say get a gold rated PSU that has 100% Japanese capacitors in it. You'll want a good strong PSU and one that isn't going to eat into your electricity bill as a bronze one is very inefficient power wise.
Also I have just replaced my cx 500 PSU as it was getting close to 2 years old and getting noisier with every month. So now I have a EVGA G2 550w Modular Gold PSU and I use ECO mode on it so its dead silent (fans off while pc is pretty much idle' when i'm just doing basic pc stuff.
Also when my friend built a computer in a mid case he said it was really hard to maneuver in it and told me to get a full tower and i will be overclocking and in the future I might be makeing the 970 in 2 way sli

I have a mid tower Bitfenix case and its okay as long as you keep all the wires safety away from the moving parts. Full towers are the best but are very large and I'd always recommend you get two front fans, a bottom one and of course there is already a back one.
Full is generally too big in my opinion/experience. Former coworker went out and got a full tower he thought looked cool but then it was so huge it didn't fit anywhere around his desk. Mid tower shouldn't be an issue as far as working in/around, at least I've never had any issues and most consumer PCs are built in a mid or micro tower. The choice is your obviously, but I didn't want you to brush a Mid off just because you didn't think there was enough room in it. Again, I have pictures in my sig that show my mid tower housing a 4790k with closed loop and 970 FTW without incident. =)
