HOW CAN I REMOVE GOOGLE DESKTOP ITEM ?

google desktop has appeared on my desktop and nothing Itry
will get rid of it. I also cannot get it off my home page
and every site I go to is being kept in my favorites and
my desktop. CAN SOMEONE HELP??????? IT'S DRIVING ME MAD.
