I don't really understand the principles behind flashing a bios and have never done it, but from researching it it sounds like it is basically what I need to do with this PS4.
The problem:
I bought a PS4 on eBay. The seller thought it was probably a demo unit and was selling it because he couldn't get it to fully boot into the OS.
This turned out to be true. I am able to get through basic setup on the PS4, but just when it looks like everything is going to work, it downloads an 'IDU' update and then after it successfully installs it it gets stuck on a screen that says "updating from server" and never gets past that.
If I disconnect the PS4 from the internet then it will just sit there asking for the user to connect to a network. You can't move out of this screen at all.
I tried installing a new HDD, but the same problem remains. I tried reinstalling the OS from a flash drive. No luck. I tried installing the OS and the 2.0.4 update via a flash drive. Still no luck. I tried downloading the update from the internet when booting into safe mode. Doesn't change anything.
Basically, it seems like I've tried everything I can try within the OS, with the exception of selecting the "repair database" option in safe mode, but that is supposed to take several hours so I will do it when I sleep tonight.
I called Sony and the woman on the phone told me to do the basic things like reinstall update through safe mode. She didn't seem to know much more than what her computer was probably advising and finally just told me to send it into Sony. That's $150 and I don't even know if they would do it considering it is a retail unit.
So yeah... Is there anything I can do to make the device forget that it is a demo unit and instead a retail console? I wouldn't think Sony designs and orders different parts for demo units, so it seems theoretically possible to wipe the demo crap from its non-HDD memory.
I don't know that much about this stuff. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I knew it was a risk to buy this, but I thought the price would make it worth it if i could fix it myself. Hopefully that's still possible.
