I am trying to find out how I can use both my speakers and headphones plugged in and simply switch between them in my playback devices but when I try and look for my speakers in my disabled / disconnected devices I go through all of them as primary device and nothing seems to be working :??:

Here is how I have my headphones / side speakers plugged into the back panel of my motherboard:
(I have the MSI 970 Gaming motherboard)

Not sure what I have to do in order to get the SS-out to work or maybe I need to plug it into the CS-out jack or maybe the RS-out for some reason? Not sure I am a bit lost as to why it is not working. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello... You are using a MSI Realtek app... there many Realtek versions of them... some work better than others.

You need to figure out how the connector is wired to your MB for use. B / and what type of Tip/ring/sleeve connector you need.
There are Multi-pole connectors that need to used... also not all connectors provide a stereo signal... and split out "Y" connection might be needed for a Mono to stereo connection.

The 1/8" 2.5-3.5 mm speaker connectors used are not always the best audio solution or made to a exacting spec... and different audio makers will use varied sizes too... but the small size is convenient... but bad for using adaptors with.

Hello... Use the sound card APP in Control panel to "Re-Task" the case front connector, OR MB rear connectors as a speaker/headphone connectors... Typically you can right click the connecter icon to change it to something/anything else...

Use SOUND-playback app in the control panel to enable or disable multi devices and outputs... in the OS.

If you plug into a wrong connector, typically a POP-Up will ask you if you want to change or Re-task that connector use.

I looked into my Realtek HD Audio Manager application and when I hover over the SS-out it shows that it's coming out of my headphones for some reason instead of speakers? I am not sure which device in my playback devices is the actual speakers that are plugged in though. Here is a few images of my playback devices and what I stated above:

Hello... Basically a headphone is the same as a set of Speakers, although you can get some higher impedance headphones... so you have a naming issue, or your chips/App can't detect the difference between the two...

I use older versions of the Realtek Apps... and you will get "right Click" option for 'Re-tasking" a connector... You could try one of their other APPs instead... If you Don't have "Re-tasking" options with your 'MSI" APP. Realtek Software is universal for their chips. B /
I'm using a Gigabyte version 6.0.1.66662 that is pretty feature packed... Different APP versions will have a feature enabled that others will not.

1) I would try a re-set to Default or APP re-install, and then attach one Device, set the APP/OS Sound routing, re-boot Windows to save the settings.
2) and install the second device correctly in the APP/OS, re-boot Windows to save the settings. B /

You can enable more than one output in Sound-playback.

I apologize for the very late reply as I basically gave up a while ago and have been using nothing but my headphones but again am trying to get these darn speakers to work. I plugged the 3.5mm jack that is coming from my Right Speaker that should connect both my side speakers and subwoofer I believe. I plugged this jack into the back of my motherboard at CS-Out.

I am in my application (Realtek HD Audio Manager) and am messing around with some of the stuff here and come across something odd but hopefully a step forward? First off before I explain what is happening here is what my Realtek HD Audio Manager application currently looks like:

The speakers I am currently using are the Insignia - 2.1 Computer Speaker System (3-Piece) - Multi

What is happening according to the diagram in my application:

  • - The left side speaker is being played through the left side of my headphone(s).
    - The right side speaker is being played through the right side of my headphone(s).
    - The center speaker is being played through the left side speaker I have setup.
    - The subwoofer is being played through my right side speaker I have setup.
    - Finally, the subwoofer below me is not playing anything through it.

This causes quite an issue because it is making me use the same device as my headphones for my speakers so it plays through my headphone(s) and only my left side speaker I have when going to watch a video online 🙁
