I have a simple cheap basic DVD made by Sony and a brand new Lenovo 25" Monitor. I have a HP Laptop running Windows 7, 3GB of Memory and 2.3 GHZ CPU. Here is my problem. The built in DVD in my computer is giving me problems and so "I thought" I could just hook up the dvd to my computer and "WaLah" watch my movies. I do have a TV but it is very old, small screen and has VCR blazened across the screen and I have no way to get it off (the remote for the TV does not exist){Also the TV is not hooked to a cable set up or satellite set up or even an antenna.} It will play the DVD's but the "VCR" message is practically in the middle of the TV screen. Watching DVD's on the TV is not good at all; plus picture quality sucks, etc. Unfortunately, my laptop does not have Video In/Video Out slots. My Lenovo Monitor has great colors, clarity, etc, etc. Is the only thing I can do is to replace/fix the built in DVD in my Laptop? I am not a computer geek, so keep an answer simple.

Do you know the cost of a External USB DVD Drive? No, I have not tried cleaning it. I can hear the built in DVD Player "grinding" like it is trying to start but when I open the DVD drawer the Disc is not spinning?

That newegg link is an HP one for 37 bucks I think, there was one cheaper but a brand I never heard of.

If the disk isn't spinning the cleaning disk won't help, you have worse problems. My experience is that it's very simple to replace a laptop drive, what model is your laptop?, you may find a replacement drive cheaper than that external.

$37 is pretty cheap. I have no idea what the HP model is. I bought the laptop new about a year ago from Walmart. If I replaced the drive would that not wipe out all my software?
