How come game companies are trying to sell us hardware through unneccarily high spec requirements?

I just saw the gears of war 4 specs. I'm not going to need a good i5 if all I need is a 750ti. It's an xboxone game I can run it on my old amd 805 with gtx 950 I know I can. I have zero doubts that a game wont run on decent settings.
So what the biz?

rdg1101 is probably right. Specs are overdone for that reason. I've also started suspecting that the recommended specs are for 4K and not 1080 gaming. I wish they would let us know what res the specs were for.

But I question how you know a game WILL work with such lower specs. Just because one game works with lower then minimum specs doesn't mean they all will. You can also look at specs as a guideline for what you'll need. If they say you'll need a 3770 or 8350 to run, then you know you'll need an 8thread CPU to run it. A 3570 or 6300 might run it, but expect places where more CPU power is needed and you'll have slow downs.

They probably recommend higher than is needed to allow some headroom and, as all chips are dfferent, this means that it's a more reliable pointer as to what hardware will be needed to run the game sufficiently. I'm sure putting hardware requirments higher than necessary isn't some devious marketing plan to make consumers spend more, infact, im certain; Gears Of War producers own neither Intel nor AMD, so what's to gain for them?
