How Do DVDs Fit Today's Large Video Games?

I was thinking about whether I should get GTA V PC on disk or digital download, when I realized that DVDs can only hold about 8GB of data. Considering the 40GB+ sizes of today's video games, does this mean that the disk version would still need to download the game using the internet? Surely the whole game can't fit on the DVD, so how does that work? Thanks.

At a guess ... compression, and/or multiple DVDs (e.g. Medieval II came on 2 DVDs).

I just purchased Dragon's Age Inquisition. It came on 4 DVD's with a 32G total install. So just like when games came on floppy disks they just throw more discs in it to make up what is required.

LOL, I remember a game called "Rise of the Robots" from years gone by that came on 20 some (maybe 22 or 23) 3 1/4" floppies! It was later common to have 4, 6 or even 8 CD-ROMs to hold larger games.
