how do exhaust and intake fans work?

There is no specific "exhaust" or "intake" fan. They are all the same fan. It's just how they are positioned in your case. A fan positioned to intake air pulls air into the case, and a fan positioned to blow out, is an exhaust.

yes, top exhausting out, front intake in, so fresh air is pulled from the front of the pc, gets pulled across the mb/gpu/ram and exhausted out the rear and the top.

There is no specific fan. I meant to type that in my first reply, but I see I missed the word "no". It's all how they are positioned. Sorry for any confusion.
