Hi all

I'm tired of my Rig. It's not slow, it's not adequate either, it's almost out dated.
i find it hard to compare my CPU against other CPU's because it's such a monstrosity. i've researched and read and done a lot comparisons between mine and others.

I really want to make a good lasting upgrade because my system as mentioned is almost around the corner to be out of date. it's almost impossible (due my socket is almost obsolete) in Denmark to get good motherboards for my CPU. my CPU is ( i think ) failing due to rapidly changing to different motherboards (i had to switch from the first (Asrock 980DE3/U3S3) to another (Gigabyte 990X gaming) due to it became very unstable. so i switched that and the Gigabyte was fabulous worked like a charm, then my PSU 550w failed, i then switched to a lower and cheaper 400w psu which i should've never done it couldn't follow through when played some heavier games that requires a lot of power from the cpu and the gpu. that psu failed and (power sourged) it took my motherboard my newly bought Gigabyte.

i bought a new 550 w PSU and a new Asrock 970 Pro3 R2.0 motherboard. did i mention i don't like asrock. and now i think my CPU is showing sign of struggle like freezups and a lot of weird stuff (very loud clicks, pops and sound drop-outs and suddenly game crashes) when i'm gaming no bluescreens yet, and weirdly enough no logs in the event viewer -> windows logs of errors that could indicate something bad.

this where my experience kicks in and it tells it's in the right time to make a new build that can follow through on the newest games (no high expectation to FPS i don't mind 30-60), be stable and dependable, to studio recording and music making in my professional home studio.

my build as right now:
CPU: AMD FX-8350 8-core 4GHz
MOBO: Asrock 970 Pro3 R2.0
Graphic: Asus GTX 1050 Dual 2GB - 2V
PSU: 550 watt
Ram 12 GB DDR3

I dont need new OS.

right now i'm at a loss 'cause i can't seem to make heads or tails of this anymore. that CPU is very hard to find budget core that can make up for it, not super seed it but at the very least make up for it
I've done comparisons to the AMD Athlon AM4 sockets (to weak), Intel Skylake comparisons I5 are to weak I7 is ok, but still a long way to go because the FX.8350 is 8-core and the i7 is 4-core.
Then there is the Ryzen Cpu's and they are so expensive.

Solution
You have mistaken preconceived beliefs about how powerful your FX CPU is compared to newer CPUs. It is not very powerful at all.

The main problem is you will need to buy new DDR4 system ram since you can't use DDR3 ram on newer systems. DDR4 is expensive right now. You will be able to continue to use your 1050, so you don't need to worry about a new videocard.

Do not get an Athlon AM4 CPU, those are almost the same as what you have now. The most cost effective AM4 to get is the Ryzen 3 2200G. The issue there is that current motherboards need a bios update to use the 2200g and 2400g. AMD offers a kit to deal with this, I'm not sure if that offer is valid in your country though.

On the Intel side, an i3 8100 should run circles around...

for gaming yes your setup is super outdated

when trying to do actual work eight 12 year old girls are not the same as four strong men, the number of cores is meaningless its the IPC that matters

the 8350 is weaker then an i3 8100

an i5 8400 would be utterly superior

Yeah ... get your point. i better read up on that.

yeah i saw that as well, but that Coffee Lake Cpu's are so expensive.

Well i think have some hardware, would that be a good replacement build?

  • Intel Core i3-8100 Coffee Lake CPU - 3.6 GHz (819 DKK ~ 135 $ USD)
    ASUS PRIME Z370-P (799 DKK Danish Krone ~ 132 $ USD)
    Crucial Ballistix LT DDR4-2400 SC - 8GB (681 DKK Danish Krone ~ 112 $ USD)

Bottomline is any new quad core will be a large improvement over what you have now. An by 'new' I don't mean an Athlon AM4 quad core.

I dont think you realise that AMD core counts dont make up for performance.

An i3 8100 (2 cores, 4 threads) is basically equal in strength to the 8350 (8 cores, 16 threads) in just about everything.
