I have a computer with a spdif out port and I was wondering if I can connect my computer to my blu-ray player/ receiver that also has the spdif port and before I can do that I need a cable and I don't know which cable type is best. I'm thinking of a 3 dollar one from eBay.

skip ebay, some sellers will give you flat out broken cables. Just go to bhphotovideo.com and pick out a cheap cable, it'll cost only a bit more than ebay but it'll work 100% of the time.

Just remember that HDMI audio is always a better option if you are connecting to a receiver and plan on outputting video as well.

Plenty can go wrong with toslink, just bending it too tightly can break the fiber optic component, and mis-speced ones can fail to even fit in the port.
