How do I connect my laptop to my desktop via ethernet cable.

I am trying to use the Wi-Fi connection on my laptop to access the internet on my desktop. I have tried using ICS but I am not having much luck. My laptop's OS is Windows 8.1 and my desktop is on Windows 10. How do I use my laptop to route an internet connection to my desktop using an Ethernet cable?

The problem is probably that you need to assign static IP addresses to the laptop wired and the desktop ethernet. This page has steps to set static IP address -- http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm
If you go back to a normal ethernet you will need to switch back to DHCP.

I have assigned a static IP address, however, my desktop is still not connecting to the internet.
