How do I connect the monitor to get 144Hz?

Hello, I'm buying an AOC G2770PF 144Hz. It has VGA, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort ports.

My graphics card is an MSI GeForce GTX 970 with HDMI, DisplayPort and 2 DVI ports.

I also own a TV that I use as a secondary monitor and only has HDMI port.

I need audio in my main monitor but not necessary in the TV.

So what's the best way to connect this to get the 144Hz? Is it true that HDMI only gives 60 Hz?
At the moment my current monitor is connected with a DVI->HDMI cable and the TV with HDMI.

Display port and dvi d can do 144hz hdmI on the other hand can't atm..personally I would use display port for your monitor.
