It doesn't really matter what class of hardware a private person like you are using, as long as it's powerful enough for your needs...
Heyo Daniel_72

There's nothing to making a dedicated server machine as of special hardware/software. Of course you need Hardware that's powerful enough to do whatever you want and the corresponding software to make the servers run.
If you'd like to, just keep your current OS on there and install whatever game server you'd like. You'll have to make sure you have a static IP on that machine though if people over the internet will need to connect.

what about windows server 2012 or something like that not sure what its called and the machine is using a server class cpu and motherbord

It doesn't really matter what class of hardware a private person like you are using, as long as it's powerful enough for your needs. Heck you could use a Pentium G3258 if that was enough for your needs.
The only real difference between server class hardware and consumer class is that the server stuff has a tighter quality control, to ensure that massive servers around the world won't shut down because a CPU failed doing something. They have ECC support as well, although I'd say you probably wouldn't need this unless you have servers for thousands of people.
Use Windows Server 2012 R2 if you'd like to. I'd probably say stick to Windows 10, of course unless you're already familiar with Server OS's then sure, go for it.
Cheers
