How do I enable DMA on my laptop's DVD?

Hello!

I have a Presario 1694 notebook with a DVD drive.

The DMA used to work on Windows Me, but now using Windows XP it only uses PIO even though it's set to use DMA if possible.

What is the problem?

Thanks!

Sorry for not responding sooner.

Yes, I have "Use DMA if Available" selected for the secondary IDE controller the drive is on. But, it only uses PIO.

When I used Windows 98 and later Me, DMA worked fine.

I have tried using Windows default drivers and ALI's drivers (it has a ALI chipset).

I'm considering selling the laptop and buying a Dell.

No.. please... not the D-WORD!!!

If DMA was working fine under 98/ME, then there should not be a problem with Windows XP. The only thing I could see is possibly an issue with the ALi chipset and XP. The only other possibility is that DMA was never working and 98/ME is lying to you (which isn't outside the realm of possibility).

Thanks for replying.

I think Win 98 / Me was correct that DMA was enabled. I tested the drive using DVD Speed, and under Win Me with DMA it says the CPU usage is 12% but under XP it's 30%.

Would there be drivers I could download?
