How do I extend laptop's display to two monitors?

I recently bought a Lenovo Y50 laptop (running windows 8.1) which doesn't have a VGA port, it has 1 HDMI, 2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 ports. I'm trying to connect this laptop to 2 new HP 25" monitors.

Ideally, I would want the laptop's lid down and the 2 monitors to display content.

I can connect to 1 external monitor just fine using the HDMI port. In order to connect to the other monitor, I bought a USB to HDMI convertor from Amazon. Now this is the display that's not working for me.

Without this external adapter, I'm successfully able to connect 1 external monitor using the HDMI cable. I even tried changing the adapter to connect to the other monitor but still only the monitor connected via HDMI cable only, extends the display. The adapter that I bought may be found here:

Am I missing something stupid here? Should I assume that the adapter is faulty?

By trying to do this you are in effect running three monitors. Is the laptop capable of this?

I'm not entirely sure. How do I check it?

Check it by using the laptop's display as display #1, then see whether you can connect display #2, and display #3. (The limit may be two displays, and one is the laptop's display). Check in Control Panel, Display.

The video device in the laptop may not support three monitors.

Very few laptops will do 2 external monitors.

I don't think the usb adapter is working. Is the monitor shown as connected? Does anything new pop up in device manager?

I think you're right. I disconnected the HDMI cable and tried to connect just the USB adapter. If the adapter was working then it should have extended display, but it didn't. Seems like the adapter is at fault here.
