How do I fix windows Rearranging my desktop items automatically?

Ok, so whenever I use a secondary moniter (I use a laptop) my desktop items move. I thought it was no big deal. So I moved them all back. when my computer rebooted My icons were messed u again. I run windows 8.1 thank you.

When you connect the secondary monitor what mode do you use it in? PC screen only / Duplicate / Extend / Second Screen only ?

If you are using Second screen only on a monitor of a higher resolution than your laptop then it's very likely that the icons are being spread out then compacted back again, in an order Windows chooses.
