How do I flash dd-wrt firmware on a common linksys router (wrt54g)?

I have a linksys wrt54g v8 and am a noob when it comes to routers. I would like to flash the router with the appropriate ddwrt firmware. I am not afraid to brick the router (this is more for learning) and the instructions to install this firmware are rather complicated. I was wondering if someone could write out a specific step by step guide to flash it with the apropriate ddwrt firmware. I have already located and download all files necessary and am somewhat already familiar with the linksys wrt54g's current firmware. Thank you for all your help

Btw my purpose is to use this as a wireless repeater on a much better netgear wirless n router.
