how do I know if my battery is dead on my laptop

I was using my laptop and it just went to a black screen now it just loads a black screen not even showing a cursor, iv tried taking the battery out and restarting but it still the same, could it be my battery?

It could be. How old is the battery? Was it holding a charge for its normal time period in the days/weeks before this? Was the battery level low before your computer died?

It a vista laptop had some problems with my battery, it wouldnt hold a charge unless it connected to charger

If you can hear the HDD, fan, and so on, when you turn the laptop on (without the adapter), than it is most probably not the battery issue.

What else could it be then?

While there may be other issues on top of the battery, the battery is clearly bad if it wouldn't hold a charge.
