umm, please elaborate more on what you need to accomplish here, .

Install Operating System on the external USB device and use it as primary drive

- Theorically you need to do the following:

- Enter Bios and change boot device priority to boot from DVD
- Insert Windows Installation DVD exit from BIOS saving changes
- Install Windows on the external DVD
- Enter Bios and change boot device priority to boot from USB

- practically Windows will probably refuse to install on an external device, I haven't tried this before, but you could look for
PWBOOT on google.

Just change the drive letter

- It is not possible to change the drive letter of your main boot drive, so if you're booting from an internal drive, it will be drive
c and this cannot be changed.

Sorry, external drive cannot be use as internal. U can't install os on it.
If somewhat u able to install os on it by means of cracking or something.
You windows will take time to boot. Because usb 2.0 are very slow, have average transfer rate of only 30 MB/s.

But Microsoft have given a function in windows 8 to use in on a pen drive or in a external hard drive. Known as "Windows To Go"

yes actually u can use it as internal if you really want slower speeds unless its usb3. you can even do it after an install by changing the drive letters and making that drive active as long as you make it active. i used to run linux on my external drive and 7 on my internal just make sure when you already have an os installed on the other drive first since when making it active with nothing will cause it not to boot
