how do i open a pdf file which was password protected on windows 7

My windows7 computer burnt out and I want to use my back up files on my new computer with windows8 but Reader wont open the pdf files that were password protected. Also how do I work with pdf files as Reader seems to have no options

if you have too boot from your old hard drive in the new pc. (safe mode) then copy the unlocked files to a usb stick.

No, the drive and the motherboard were burnt out on my 2 year old laptop. I'm using my previous back up from 3 months ago which has my documents on it.
