Question How do I recover my files which I lost when I restarted my computer?

Just now, I created a new Windows Account on my computer. I transferred a lot of files from my main account to the new account. Once that was done, I uploaded some of the pictures from the folders into Google Photos. All of a sudden, my computer froze. I waited around 10 minutes before I decided to force shut down the computer. When I loaded it back on, the files which I transferred from my main account was missing. I also had some logging in problems before that in which the Windows message told that I had some problems signing into my account and I had to sign out of it and sign in again. I need some files for tomorrow... Help!!

When you transferred the files did you use Copy or Move?

If Copy then the files should still be in the original host location/folder via your main account.

If Move then the files may have been lost completely when the computer froze.

Worth a filename search to look in other folders - not uncommon that a "drag and drop" move inadvertently results in the files going to some other folder/location: Desktop perhaps....

If the files are not found then you will need to access your backups (e.g., OneDrive or any other destination backup location that you may be using).

I used the move function. Does that mean I can't use any software to recover the files also?

Well you can try, Recuva is good to scan the systems. Usually when a Move gets interrupted or crashes, the files just poof into thin air. Does not happen often, but still not a good idea to move files. Next time keep backups of files and if you have to delete them for some reason, make sure they are in the destination before deleting the originals.

99% of "I lost my files" issues would not even be an issue if there was a backup done.

I just have to strongly agree with hang-the-9 when it comes to making backups. That ounce of prevention sure beats the painful pound of cure necessitated by not making backups. The school of hard knocks is a great teacher, but it's certainly a painful one.

One of the things I tell junior IT people is that the best way to learn how something works or how to do something is to break it (often by accident) and then try to fix it.
Just having someone tell you "click here" to do something will not give you the same type of in-depth knowledge.
