I was defraging the registry when my laptop hung up. Now I can't boot into windows 8.1. I have very important files I don't want to lose. I ran the restore, refresh, repair from a disk, Kaspersky rescue disk 10, etc. I use to do this stuff but it's been years and I am new to windows 8.1. HELP PLEASE!

Solution
The product key is likely stored in your bios. Therefor, there is no need to get it via an app. Reinstall Windows and it will be picked up during the install process. Also, upgrade to win 10 when you can. Most users like it better than 8.x.
Chkdsk won't fix a Registry you broke yourself - it could only repair disk errors and corrupted files. You will do better with
sfc /scannow
and it seems you'll need to take the hard disk out and slave it to the machine you're posting from. Before you do that, try the StartUp repairs again and when you're offered alternatives, choose Command Prompt. Sometimes that works.

Ok, I ran the sfc command. It says there is another system repair in progress to restart the computer and run sfc again. I did (3x). It says the same thing. Should I just let it try to run through when it's a black screen? The hdd light still blinks like its working on something. Or is there a dos program I can run to get the product key. I have a disk but I don't have the key because I just bought the laptop (used) but no way to get with that person again.

If you can put up an Administrative Command prompt, type
slmgr /dli
and press Enter. If memory serves me properly, that should display the Product Key. If you still see that message about another programme, you'll have to let the Checkdisk run its course.

This doesn't work.
I finally got chkdsk to work. It wouldn't run before because it said it was write protected. It found 0 errors. I used DISKPART to look at the partition. Well, there are four. It says that c:\ is recovery, d:\ is system reserved, e:\ no label but it's 146GB I'm sure that's where all of my stuff is, and f:\ no label that's 450MB. They're all primary NTFS and Healthy. When I use Detail Disk it says that status = online, Path = 0, Target = 0, Location Path = PCIROOT(0)#PCI(1F02)#ATA(C00T00L00), Read Only = No, Boot Disk = No, Pagefile Disk = No, etc. all NO's. Shouldn't this be my bootdisk?

So does E:\ show up in Windows Explorer? If not, the files could be hidden. Bring up an elevated Command Prompt again and type attrib then press Enter. From the list of possibilities on offer to unhide all the files on that partition.

I'm on a Linux system at the moment so I can't check the precise syntax but from memory it might be
attrib -h E:/*.*
but check thos possibilities first.

I can NOT boot into windows to get to windows explorer. Everything I'm doing is in DOS. Anyway, I got went into my bios and disabled my bluetooth and flash module. Then changed minimal boot to thorough boot. I let it try to boot up from the hard drive. It started it's automatic repair, went to diagnosing problems, and (here is where it normally freezes up) got to the screen that said this may take over an hour. Yeah! It says now, attempting repairs. The windows activity indicator is turning in a circle and my hard drive light is blinking. 🙁 It says startup couldn't repair your pc. Log file: E:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

Sorry it took this long to get back. My internet was off and we just got it back on. I finally got fed up with it and reinstalled windows. There was no need to put in my product key and everything went smoothly. Once I got into windows it saved my old data. I just took that and burned it so I'd have it. Thank Goodness. Then I got a product key finder and ran that so now I have my product key too. Thank you so much for the help.
