how do i turn this apple off

try Option + Control (not command) + Shift + Power

You can just force the shutdown holding the power button for 5-10 sec

Select "Shutdown" from the "Apple" menu (the one with the icon of an apple in the top left corner). That's the safest way to power off. Normally you just send them to Sleep, again from this menu or by briefly pressing the power button.
