I also have a recent Vizio, and no, I do not think you can do this directly.
WiFi, the TV will talk to a router. Something that coughs up an IP address.

I guess if you did some ICS thing from your laptop it might work. But an HDMI cable from laptop to TV would be far, far easier, and would actually 'work'.

If you can get the PLEX app on your tv, you can set up your computer to be a PLEX server.

Then you can watch video, view photos, play music files that are on your computer.

I just got a Vizio smart TV and was wondering the same. In the app store, there is one called "Plex". Install that, then download and install the Plex media server on your laptop.
