I am planning to format my computer and I am wondering if there is a way to backup all of your progress in steam games (Dota 2, fallout 3 and new vegas)...Do you just use the steam backup game files option? Because I heard that it doesn't backup your progress or data

Solution
Yes it should as the idea of it is to help you synchronize your game saves across pc's. However it would not hurt to create a local backup of your saves
Since Dota2 is a online game, progress should be immediately saved. As for Fallout 3 and New Vegas, just find the save files located on your computer (probably in My Documents), and upload those to google drive or whatever online backup service you are using.

So any games online (LOL, CSGO, TF2. Rust, Garry's mod) will be automatically saved?

Like @Archgaull said if it is an online game, your progress will be stored in the cloud / by host server. For other games check weather you have Steam Synchronization activated go to the game right click properties, select update and then see if there is an option for steam cloud and tick syncronise progress if this option is available.

For all other games that do not have steam cloud support you can either dig into the steam apps folder and backup the saves - most likely you will need to do a google search to find the files you need to backup for each game. Or what I do is use GameSavemanager it backups and saves alll your local game saves http://www.gamesave-manager.com/ - as well as backing up in event of a hdd fail it can help you restore to a new pc.
