How do you edit units in the editor?

I went into the Civ 3 Conquests editor and thought I was changing unit
graphics. Just to test it out I scrolled to the warrior and then
scrolled through the "icons" until I got something different. But
when I went to test my changes by playing a game I found out that
changing the "icon" in the icon box on the unit editor only changes
the icon in the display of production choices. It doesn't change the
unit graphics as they appear in the game. The warrior was still the
same looking warrior when I moved it around on the map.

So my question is, how do you change a unit's graphics? And how do
you add new units to the game? When I tried to add new units, using
the editor, they didn't appear. Is anyone else having this problem?

You also must change the folder assigned for the unit art.

Check on the websites, you'll find more info on how to edit. It
isn't easy once you change more than the rules or the map, because
stuff like units link to graphics, text, and the civilopedia -- and
all must be correctly changed for it to work.

To add a new unit or make changes to a unit.
Easy method (if you don't care about the civilopedia)
1 create or download new unit flcs see www.civfanatics.com for a whole bunch
of player made units.
2 save unit flcs, sound files, and ini file into ..\art\units\"name of your
unit" folder Be sure that the folder name is identical to the name you've
given your new unit.
3 make sure that the ini file has the same name as the new unit.
4 if new unit has a units32 image, copy & paste into your existing units32
file in the "..\art\units" folder be sure to match color palletes as closely
as possible.
if new unit does not have (or you don't want to edit the units32 file) use
any icon you wish. There is a units32 file at www.civfanatics.com which
contains thousands of unit icons from many units already created and posted
at that site.
5 add new or rename an existing unit in the editor.
6 if you renamed use the existing civilopedia entry, if you created new copy
the civilopedia entry of a different unit.

Harder method (if you care about the civilopedia)
1 instructions 1 thru 5 above
2 type in a civilopedia entry. The captial letters before the underscore
must remain. The part after the underscore doesn't have to be but should be
the name of your unit.
3 Open civilopedia.txt from the "..\text" directory. Use notepad or wordpad
to open it Scroll down the file until you get to the grouping of units. Go
to the end of the units group. After the last one, look at the previous
entry, follow it but use your own information where necessary.
4. Open pediaicons.txt from the "..\text" directory. Scroll down until you
find the units list. At the end do the same thing as with the
civilopedia.txt in the previous step. This is where you point to the image
that will show in the civilopedia. If you have an image you want to use
(make sure it is the same size and color count as the others), copy it into
the directory where the other images are and then type the location into
pediaicons.txt file. If you do not have an image you want to use then point
to one of the other unit images.

This is both in and out of the editor. The editor only allows you to change
behavior of the unit and it's representation icon. Not how it looks in
game. The steps I've given you are very basic, but will get you a different
looking unit in the game. There are threads at www.civfanatics.com in the
forums on how to do this and go into much deeper detail. If you need
further help, you can e-mail me directly if necessary.

Thank you Tzar Sasha. I've been visiting the web site and have done
some exploring as well as some experimenting with the Civ 3 editor. I
hope to get the hang of it soon.
