How do you remove sticky residue from old rubber?

I have a kitchen appliance with handles that are covered in either a hard rubber, or pliable plastic. The appliance has been in storage for many years, and the material has grown tacky/sticky. I tried Goo Gone and it did not work. Anyone have any other solutions?

Try 'Awesome' general purpose cleaner but rather strong... or 'Easy Off' oven cleaner be carefull with both, mostly with easy-off... use rubber gloves for safety and apply it in a ventilated area... let it work the residue off for the better part of an hour.
