How do you setup 3 monitors to split the image of a racing simulator?

I've seen a lot of triple monitor setups on youtube being used mainly to give a better peripheral vision in racing simulators and since I'm a huge race simulator fan and intend to build a triple monitor setup myself, how would I do it? What would I need?

Solution
Well, each monitor will require an input, so your videocard would have to have enough outputs to connect to the three. Then, if you are spreading the game across three monitors as if it was one large image, you are tripling the workload. So if you are using three 1080p monitors, you need a card powerful enough to handle that workload.

1920x1080 is a bit over 2 million pixels. So once you chosen your three monitors then calculate the total pixels and that'll give you an idea of the level of card you'd need. For comparison, 4k is over 8 million pixels.
It will be a setting in the GPU panel, with AMD, it's know as Eyefinity that will basically make your desktop think it's say 1080x3, so 5760x1080 so the game will scale to that settings. Otherwise, windows and games will think you have 3 seperate 1080 screens, or 1920x1080 x 3.

And in terms of hardware, what will I need? Is one gpu enough or will I need at least 2?
