How does this USB work?

It is a 4gb Toshiba USB and i knocked the casing off accidentally and noticed there is no microchip.

It is just clear plastic and nothing else. So i took the metal casing off the front of the usb and its a black square with the connectors.

So i thought the back square had the chip it in so i took it out of the plastic casing and it didn't work but when i put it back in it works again.

The micro chip must be right under the connector and the only reason for the clear part is so the usb doesn't get stuck in your computer.
