How far in does the rigid tubing need to go into compression?

Before I tighten the top on how far in does the rigid tubing need to go

You should feel it "pop" into place. A lot of them have inner o-rings and the tubing needs to be forced down past that, once that happens you're good to go. Just make sure you sand off a bit off the end so that you can push it past the o-ring without damaging anything.
