How fast is Wireless 802.11 G?

Does Wireless 802.11G router limit the internet speed when
used with DSL or cable modem? Are they as fast as DSL or
cable modem?

Anything better and faster than 802.11G to use with DSL or
cable modem wirelessly?

Wireless G is 54 Mbs which is a whole lot faster than you cable or DSL

I heard that wireless has a lot higher latency than something like
Ethernet, so games are too lagy. They can easily sustain the
512KB/s-2MB/s though. I've got it and it's fine for browsing the net,
but I haven't tried it with games.

802.11G runs at 54 Mbps. Cable tops out around 14 Mbps in theory, and is
likely limited by your ISP to less than 5 Mbps. DSL seldom runs more than 2
Mbps for home installations.

So, wireless G is perfectly fine for Internet use, and is in fact the most
popular wireless protocol.

HOWEVER, wireless routers and cards are more expensive than wired, so if you
still have that $100 budget you mentioned in the other thread, spend it
wisely. Also, wireless security takes a bit of time to set up. Still,
Linksys, Netgear, and D-Link (in that order) are your best bets for
performance and reliability.

But, just remember that actual data transmission rates are ~ 1/2 of the
published standard. E.g., with 802.11g, you can expect the max transmission
rate to be 27mbs - still much faster than any dsl, cable available.

In fact, that 27Mbps is about the fastest you can expect. Using my 54g
in the same room as the base station I can hit this speed but if I take
the laptop upstairs to the study I only see about half this speed.

It's still faster than most ADSL but slower than some of the ADSL2+
technologies.
