How hot do P4s run?

I've can't seem to find a reliable answer to that question. One web site says they are substantially cooler than AMD, others say they are hotter and some say they are about the same temp.

Anandtech and Toms Hardward both have gobs of performance data but no heat comparision. What's the real answer? ? ?

If anyone responds, please post evidence and not opinion.

My P4 2.6 GHz is usually about 31 idle and as high as 45 under full load with hot ambient conditions.

The thing you have to remember is that there is a lot of variability in the sensing accuracy of various motherboards. For instance, I just took a P4 1.6a out of an Asus P4S333 board where I had it running at 2.1 GHz. in the low 30's temp wise. I put the same CPU and Vantec HSF in an Abit BH7 board and get temps in the upper 40's at the same voltage and speed!

I've done the same thing with Athlons... same chip different board with radically different temp readings. So I'm beginning to take my temp readings a little less seriously as long as the systems is stable.

As for which brand of CPU runs cooler, well, they both are running into some serous wattage in terms of power consumption, so neither brand can be said to run "cool". The heat spreader on P4's may help the heat disapation some...
