I know there was a post on heat yesterday but I thought average heat would depend on the CPU. I installed my XP2700 on a MSI K7N 6570 MOBO.
My system temp is around 40c and the CPU around 60c when its just standing idle (reading from the bios)
Given the XP2700 has almost the highest clock speed of all the athlons (with a drop to the xp2800 etc) is that temp something to be concerned about.
I used the stock sink and fan (removed the cover correctly).
what do you guys think. I have thermal compound but dont wanna mess with it if i dont have to.

I've got a XP 2700+ (T-Bred B) on an Asus A7V8X mobo; soon will be on a MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR mobo. Right now I'm getting temps of about 40-45c on my CPU and about 30c for the mobo (According to Asus Probe). I'm using the smart fan function on Thermaltake Volcano 9 for cooling. It sounds like your running a little hot, whats your ambient temp like?

ambient temp couldnt have been more then say 25 degrees c when i was taking the measurements.
I hope i didnt do anything wrong when installing the CPU - my version of the heatsink that came with the CPU didnt have a peel off sticker - instead it had a plastic cover over the whole of the unerside of the heatsink (AMD instructions point out there are these 2 types)
I struggled to get the heatsink onto the MOBO cos the mobo was seated in the PC already (bc i wanted to test the mobo didnt fry b4 installing the cpu/ram etc) but it has clicked on and is locked down - I just cant see how much contact the cpu is making with the heatsink.
whats your ambient temp if your whole rig is so much cooler then mine.

My ambient temp is about the same as yours. I've got 5 case fans on my rig. Its either because of all the fans or you need a BIOS update. Sometimes the BIOS reads the temp wrong. When I first bought my Asus board, my temps were being read as being 65c idle for the CPU and 45c for the mobo. After updating my BIOS I was getting temp readings of what I just told you. I'm pretty sure thats what is happing with you. Even if it isn't because of that, Athlons should be able to last quite a while even with those temps.

Sounds like your running a bit warm. I got the XP2500 running on an A7N8X cooled with Volcano 9 cool mod + 2 case fans (one blowing, one sucking). MoBo Temp 30c and idle temp of CPU is 40c (when fan is @ 4800 RPM).

FallOutBoyTonto is right, your CPU will be fine at those temps and if it does get to hot your mobo should shut down when the temp gets to 75c or somewhere in that range. 80c is death temp.

Cooler is better though, I would recommend you get yourself a good heatsink / fan combo. Try to get one that was designed for XP 3200+ CPU's to ensure it will run cool enough for you and be usefull for future upgrades. If you are not afraid of noise, I'd recommend the Volcano 9... But at 4800 RPM's it sounds like a jet engine! (you can run it @ 1300 and its barely audible). All in all I am not too impressed with the HSF's that come in the retail package with the Athlon XP 2500 - 2800 CPU's
