How long do defrags take

So i recently started a defrag and it's taken over a day with 26 passes and still not done. But I had to cancel the defrag in the end, and it showed that 2% fragmented so I guess what percentage should I defrag again?

Are you trying to get it down to zero, is that it? This is not needed and indeed maybe impossible. Fragmentation is normal for HD, as long as it's not overly so, don't go obsessive about it. Is like getting your house completely 100% germ-free, all day, everyday. That's obsessive-compulsive unhealthy behavior.

No I'm just wondering how long should I have my defrag run for, I was under the assumption that they stop themselves after a certain number of passes.
