How long does it take to flash a bios?

I'm trying to flash the bios using the usb. The instruction manual tells me to hold down the button until the bios led comes on and wait for the led to turn off to signify that the flash was complete. Its been about 24 hours at time of post and that light is still on.

This bios is on an ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 motherboard. I think I might have the usb in the wrong port and not properly formated, but it still shouldn't take this long to flash.

Well you are doing something wrong. At Asus site found manual and there is 3 ways to update BIOS.
Go here: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A99FX_PRO_R20/#support, choose your system, and under manuals download your manual. In section 3.10 there is description how to update BIOS.
